Need a creative idea to take care of a problem area in you yard? Whether you are dealing with deep shade, poor drainage soil or you just do not want to cut the grass anymore, Rock Gardens can be the ideal solution.
A few years ago I decided I would use one entire weekend and create my very first rock garden. I was eagerly anticipating an end to pushing and pulling the lawn mower up and down the steep and slippery slope running the length of my front yard. What I did not anticipate was the amount of backbreaking work, the vast variety of botanical species to choose from, and the amount of time it takes for them to mature into something remotely resembling the pictures in garden magazines. By the time I was finished rocking the entire length of the yard, every muscle and every bone in my body was screaming in pain. I had grossly under estimated the number of rocks I needed and my new bedding plants looked so small and sad and they were beginning to wilt. My rockery looked more like a vacant building lot than a garden.
If you decide that Rock gardening is for you then make sure you plan ahead and remember get more rocks and more plants then you think you need. You can order your rocks from a landscaping site and have them delivered to your driveway, but before you start laying them out, there is a bit of prep work to do. Here are a few suggestions you may want to use.
Draw out a detailed garden plan on paper and take it with you when you visit your local garden store.
